PLANTS FOR THE PLANET
This challenge is all about getting your hands dirty to plant something for the planet! With your EcoMarines team, decide on what to plant, plant it in your school, watch it grow and send us some updates. There are even prizes to be won for the school with the best PLANT SELFIES!
Gardening or growing plants is super important to help us improve our environments. Here are few reasons why plants can help save our planet:
Plants can clean the pollution in the air by releasing oxygen
Growing your own food reduces packaging and waste
Plants support wildlife like insects
Gardening helps us have respect and compassion for our ecosystems
HOW IT WORKS
Organise an EcoMarines meeting with your EcoMarines teacher, ambassadors and support crew. It could be a good idea to invite your groundskeeper along to the meeting as well!
Here are a few things to discuss in your meeting:
What types of plants will you grow? Check out our Plants for the Planet Guide for some ideas and tips!
Where will your crew grow your plants? A garden bed, a pot?
What materials do you need? Will you need to purchase new ones? A good way to raise money for your plants is to recycle drink containers with the Containers for Change refund scheme:
It's time to start organising! Try get all the materials you will need together before your planting day such as soil, garden gloves, garden tools and of course your seeds or seedlings!
If your crew are thinking of planting in pots, why not recycle something to make into a pot? Here are some ideas:
An old rubbish bin with holes drilled in the bottom
A hessian bag
Smaller plants can be put in cans, milk bottles and even plastic bottles with the top cut off!
Get planting for the planet!
You could organise a working bee in the weekend or after school to get your plants in the ground!
Make sure you follow the instructions for each plants. Afterwards, your crew can create a roster to make sure there is someone on duty each day to maintain and water your plants!
Keep a photo journal! Take Plant Selfies with your EcoMarines crew and your new plants at different stages of growth.
Send us your photos and if you want to post it on social media, use the hashtag #TEMplantselfie. There are bonus points up for grabs if you wear your EcoMarines shirts!
Your Plant Selfies might even be featured on our EcoMarines social media pages!!!
