THE 3 P'S WORLD TOILET DAY CHALLENGE
World Toilet Day is on November the 19th this year! This day is all about raising awareness on good sanitation and waste water practices. On this day, it is important to acknowledge those who do not have access to sanitation, but we also aim to ensure we use the sanitation systems that we have properly and in a way that benefits our environment. 4.5 billion people live life without a safe toilet, so let's make sure we look after ours!
Our focus for World Toilet Day is the 3 P's: Pee, Poo and Paper. These are the only 3 things that should be flushed down the toilet. It is important to share this message as flushing anything else can cause poor water quality, blocked drains and ruin our environments. So, get your Early Learning Centre involved in this challenge thanks to UnityWater!
HOW IT WORKS
Explain World Toilet Day to the kids in your centre! Start by showing children the fantastic UnityWater Video all about their Junior Poo Crew and the 3 P's!
Play the 'To Flush or Not To Flush" game with your class! This game is flexible but basically involves the teacher holding up household items or items that frequently get flushed down the toilet. Children can then guess if they can or cannot flush the items and why - just like in the video!
You can use items around your classroom or bring in some items from home!
Or thanks to UnityWater, you can download these game cards and hold those up instead. The children can have the option to place the cards into the Toilet, Sink/Drain or the rubbish bin.
After you have played your game, it's time to have a discussion with your centre about what they have learnt! Here are some questions you can ask them:
What are the 3 P's?
Why is it important to only flush the 3 P's down the toilet?
What happens if we flush other items down the toilet?
What can you do at home to make sure the 3 P's are only flushed down the toilet?
Collect all your centres' ideas and answers together! Now is the time to get creative and think of a fun way to share with us why it is important to know the 3 P's!
Here are some creative ways to shares your centre's thoughts:
An information poster
An interview video where your kids share their answers
Make sure to send us your centre's submissions and your centre will go in the draw to win an exciting prize!
